Caitlin Lambert - Grand Prize Winner

Congratulations to Caitlin Lambert, Age 14, of Waxhaw, North Carolina, Grand Prize Winner of the 2012 SAVE THE FROGS! Poetry Contest, for her poem "Goodbye".

by Caitlin Lambert, Age 14

There once was something called a pond
Where amphibians lived that shared a bond
With humans in a secret way
Before the Machine took their homes away
Always thirsting for something greater
Never thinking of what happens later
Now the ponds are parched and dry
And skyscrapers have filled the sky
Forests and meadows no longer green
Not a single tree to break the scene
All at the hands of that human Machine

Madeline O'Connor - Winner - 13 & Under Category

Congratulations to Madeline O'Connor, Age 13, of Westerly, Rhode Island, for her poem "Frog Memory".

Frog Memory
by Madeline O'Connor, Age 13

Silver moonlit waters like polished slate
Her eyes are the midnight sky
An obsidian oblivion,
Her body bottle-green and tapered

She stares in timid silence
As I stare back in fascination
I from the glowing pond shore
Her from the water’s vegetation

Her eyes sparkle with a knowledge
And we gaze as if spellbound
Until she glides into the water
and I hear a lovely sound

Nature is so flawless
We simply must conserve it
For if we tear it down
I suppose we don’t deserve it

Diana Woodcock - Winner of the 18+ Category

Congratulations to Diana Woodcock of Doha, Qatar, winner of the 18+ age group, for her poem "Tiny Everglades Frogs".

Tiny Everglades Frogs
by Diana Woodcock

Imagine my surprise,
coming to see alligators,
crocodiles, anhingas, wood storks,
yet being mesmerized
by tiny frogs.

Of all things! But that one
grunts, this one rings,
that one bleats, this one’s
clicking two marbles together.

When the rain stops,
I step outside --
raucous, cacophonous, glorious!
So glad I came
during the season
of rain.
