Re-Frogging America:
Quail Hollow Ranch in Ben Lomond, CA
(Santa Cruz County)

Re-Frogging America Homepage | Wetland Construction Workshops

Introduction

In October 2014, SAVE THE FROGS! biologists and Santa Cruz community members converged at the Quail Hollow Ranch to design wetlands. This Wetlands Construction Workshop took place in a perfect location because much of the Quail Hollow Ranch was once a functional wetland. In times past, the owners of the land built drainage ditches, drying out the former wetland in order to grow crops. The field on both sides of the driveway was once a vibrant wetland. SAVE THE FROGS! Founder Dr. Kerry Kriger, wetland construction expert Tom Biebighauser and biologists from British Columbia, Mexico, Los Angeles and the Bay Area surveyed the Quail Hollow area and designed several wetlands that could be built to improve the ecological value and aesthetics of the historic ranch.

Next to the parking lot is a damaged but still existent wetland. A drainage ditch cuts through the western edge of this wetland, causing it to dry more often than it should.quail hollow wetland

We found this lovely Western Toad (Bufo boreas) in the wetland:Emily Moskal

This drainage ditch cuts through the main field and ensures that the field stays dry. The first step to restoring this former wetland is to disable the drainage ditch.quail hollow wetland

We designed three wetlands in the middle of the field, one to the east of the logs and two to the west of the logs:quail hollow wetland
