Update on Bangladeshi Frog Conservation Efforts by Nurul Islam

Monday, January 30th, 2012

SAVE THE FROGS! hopes to extend its amphibian conservation movement to Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a small country with rich biodiversity in South East Asia. The amphibian populations are declining rapidly and it is assumed that many unknown species may go extinct before they are identified. The major threats to amphibians are the use of pesticides, climate change, habitat destruction, frog dissections, deforestation, and the illegal export of frog legs. Dr. Kerry Kriger, Founder of SAVE THE FROGS!, has offered to help Nurul Islam and Dr. Shahneaz Ali Khan create a SAVE THE FROGS! Bangladesh.

The five members of SAVE THE FROGS! Bangladesh have already had their first meeting in Chittagong, Bangladesh. On December 14, 2011 they visited a school in a remote village near Sitakundu Eco Park. The students aged from 12-17 and were taught about amphibian conservation and the importance of frogs. They distributed some outreach material among the students illustrating the role of frogs to the ecosystem and their threats.

Save The Frogs Day – April 30th, 2010

Save The Frogs Day

We are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Save The Frogs Day will be held on Friday April 30th, 2010. Save The Frogs Day is an event we conceived and coordinate. The goal of Save The Frogs Day is to raise global awareness of amphibian extinctions, and to get people of all ages actively involved in amphibian conservation efforts.

http://savethefrogs.com/day

The 1st Annual Save The Frogs Day was legally recognized by Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia and Mayor Gregor Robertson of Vancouver, BC, and Save The Frogs Day educational events took place in at least fifteen countries worldwide. We are working hard to ensure that Save The Frogs Day 2010 events take place at thousands of schools, zoos, museums, and community groups worldwide, and that the day is covered by major news outlets throughout the world.

There are already Save The Frogs Day events planned in the USA, Croatia, Colombia, Italy, India South Africa and Brazil. In the coming weeks, we’ll be listing details of all these events on the Save The Frogs Day webpage.

We need you to get involved! The Save The Frogs Day webpage lists at least 15 ways that teachers, students and schools can take part in Save The Frogs Day activities. We also have ideas for scientists, zoos, museums, musicians, and businesses. And everybody can help by spreading the word…emailing your friends and colleagues, putting a link to Save The Frogs Day on your webpage, etc.

To make Save The Frogs Day huge, we need your financial support!
Frogs are going extinct worldwide. Please help us cover the costs of educational and promotional materials to ensure Save The Frogs Day permeates the distant corners of the planet…as well as the schools in your hometown!

On the importance of environmental education

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

A message I just received:

‘Hi Kerry,
I am from South Africa, Cape Town. My parents live in SA, Kwazulu Natal, Vryheid, and in this small town there is a small dam. In this small dam, where i spent a lot of my time whilst spending my youth, there is a lot of frog. The nickname for this dam is Paddadammetjie, as is commonly known to all the residents of Vryheid.

But my cousin still lives in that town and she has a 7year old son. He came home crying the other day because the boys in his school took some frogs from the dam (the school is close to Paddadam) and the boys broke all the legs of all the frogs.’

These are the people who grow up to be the business executives and politicians that have no problem destroying frog habitat or polluting the environment if it means good money. If you think our environmental education projects are important, please consider donating to SAVE THE FROGS!
Thanks, Kerry

Making Save The Frogs Day 2010 a Massive Success

Save The Frogs Day 2009

Few people are aware that frogs are disappearing worldwide at unprecedented rates. As most of the threats to frogs are caused by the actions of individuals, we need to educate our society with all due speed if we plan to stop an imminent mass extinction of amphibians that will result in irreversible consequences to ecosystems and to humans.

Can you imagine how much would be getting done to prevent global warming if, as is the case with frog extinctions, only 2% of the population had ever heard of global warming? Nothing would get done! Education is key, and that’s why Save The Frogs Day is so important.

We can make the amphibian common knowledge by the 2nd Annual Save The Frogs Day, April 30th, 2010, but ONLY WITH YOUR SUPPORT! Please chip in $10 right now so that we can make the 2nd Annual Save The Frogs Day a massive international event covered by every major news organization on the planet.

Donate Charity

We’re already planning the events…benefit concerts, activities at schools, zoos, museums, free public lectures, and we’re already writing politicians. Earlier this year Governor Kaine of Virginia became the highest ranking government official to officially acknowledge the amphibian extinction crisis when he signed Save The Frogs Day 2009 into law in Virginia. Mayor Robertson of Vancouver followed suit. Thousands of children in 15 different countries got educated about frogs through free public lectures. That was the first time the event was held, with virtually no funding and no full-time organizers for the event.

Imagine how big Save The Frogs 2010 can be — will be — with your support.

Please donate $10 right now and make Save The Frogs Day 2010 a massive success that eventually raises millions of dollars for amphibian conservation projects.

Thanks, Dr. Kerry Kriger
