Save The Frogs Day

We are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Save The Frogs Day will be held on Friday April 30th, 2010. Save The Frogs Day is an event we conceived and coordinate. The goal of Save The Frogs Day is to raise global awareness of amphibian extinctions, and to get people of all ages actively involved in amphibian conservation efforts.

The 1st Annual Save The Frogs Day was legally recognized by Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia and Mayor Gregor Robertson of Vancouver, BC, and Save The Frogs Day educational events took place in at least fifteen countries worldwide. We are working hard to ensure that Save The Frogs Day 2010 events take place at thousands of schools, zoos, museums, and community groups worldwide, and that the day is covered by major news outlets throughout the world.

There are already Save The Frogs Day events planned in the USA, Croatia, Colombia, Italy, India South Africa and Brazil. In the coming weeks, we’ll be listing details of all these events on the Save The Frogs Day webpage.

We need you to get involved! The Save The Frogs Day webpage lists at least 15 ways that teachers, students and schools can take part in Save The Frogs Day activities. We also have ideas for scientists, zoos, museums, musicians, and businesses. And everybody can help by spreading the word…emailing your friends and colleagues, putting a link to Save The Frogs Day on your webpage, etc.

To make Save The Frogs Day huge, we need your financial support!
Frogs are going extinct worldwide. Please help us cover the costs of educational and promotional materials to ensure Save The Frogs Day permeates the distant corners of the planet…as well as the schools in your hometown!

How did your love for frogs start?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Here’s a letter I received today:

“Dear Mr. Kriger,
I love your website. I am positively the biggest frog lover in the world. I am eleven years old and I live in colorado. My name is Kathryn and my room is totally decorated in frog stuff. Well the reason why I am e-mailing you is because I wanted to ask you, how did your love for frogs start and why do you believe that frogs should be saved? Well it would be great if you could answer me back. Thanks.
Kathryn B.”

I actually never had any fascination with frogs when I was growing up. While in the rainforests of the Osa Peninsula when I was 20 though, I saw a treefrog calling from the side of a tree, and I was struck by how amazing and primitive it was. I felt pretty lucky to see something so incredible. A few years later I had to decide what to study for my Ph.D. research. Since I like hanging out at streams, I decided I should work with animals that live along streams. While deciding between various groups of stream-dwelling animals, I learnt that frogs were rapidly disappearing, so they became the obvious choice for my Ph.D. research. Spending four years hanging out with frogs in the rainforest definitely confirmed my belief that frogs are the coolest animals! It would be a terrible loss if we lost the sense of connection with nature we feel when we are around frogs.
Kerry

Frog Shirts

Frog populations worldwide are in the midst of a mass extinction crisis, yet most people are completely unaware! We need your help in getting the word out. This contest invites you to create cool artwork that features frogs and says SAVE THE FROGS! or savethefrogs.com (or both) somewhere on it. The contest will raise awareness of the amphibian extinction problem by getting people involved and interested, and the artwork will be used on t-shirts, stickers, posters, coffee mugs, hats, and in greeting cards and books, to both publicize our cause and raise money for SAVE THE FROGS! amphibian conservation efforts.

The 1st Annual Frog Art Contest comes to a close July 10th, so hurry and make your mark in history!

Oh, we forgot to mention there are CASH PRIZES!!!!
