The current list of amphibians known to occur in Panama refers to 202 species. Almost every year this number increases by new country records or description of new species.
The Cordillera Central of southern Costa Rica and western Panama is a high amphibian endemism area and home to a great number of species. Especially in this region severe amphibian decline and die offs, caused by the chytrid fungus, have been observed. However, reports on rediscoveries or newly discovered populations of amphibian species, which were thought to be lost, have been risen up recently. Hopefully this is the beginning of a recovery in at least some populations. Unfortunately ongoing habitat destruction is still the biggest threat to amphibians in Panama and worldwide.
All photos within this album have been taken by myself in western Panama within the last three years.
