Two red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) showing the common red-backed phase and the much less common tan-striped color morph. These are lungless salamanders that lay their eggs on land and undergo direct development (i.e. they bypass the aquatic larval stage and hatch as miniature terrestrial salamanders).
