The internet provides an amazing framework for educating a large number of people in a very short time, with relative ease. When I decided to build this site, I had no prior web design experience, and I had only conceived of a small fraction of what you see here today. Yet it took me only one month from the time I started teaching myself web design to the time I got the site online, in essentially its current form. Being able to control your own website is the key to having a website full of information...a designer can make a site look nice, but only you know what text to put on each page.
Here are my tips.
Dreamweaver CS4: The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland. This book will tell you everything you need to know about designing a website from scratch, and with amazing clarity. I give it a 10 out of 10 without thinking twice.
I strongly recommend using Dreamhost. On top of being carbon-neutral, they have a user-friendly website that will make your life easy. For instance, this site's Frog Photos gallery, the FrogWiki, the FrogForum, the soon to be unveiled FrogBlog, and the SAVE THE FROGS! newsletter were all installed to savethefrogs.com as simple "One-Click Installs" offered by Dreamhost. Plus they have great customer service and excellent prices. Use the promo code GET25OFF and you'll save an extra $25 when you sign up with them.
