Tell New Zealand's Government Not To Destroy Critical Frog Habitat!
Dear SAVE THE FROGS! Supporter,
Two of the world's most unique and endangered frogs are under imminent threat of extinction, as the New Zealand government has plans to remove legal protections from the strongholds of the frogs' last remaining populations. If the government's plans go through, the land will be open to mining, and the critically endangered Archey's Frog (Leiopelma archeyi) frogs will almost certainly go extinct.
Please send the New Zealand government this pre-written letter and tell them not to destroy critical frog habitat!
The Archey's Frog has been called the world's most evolutionarily distinct and globally threatened frog species by the Zoological Society of London. Unfortunately, 88% of these frogs have disappeared since 1996. The frogs are unlikely to recover quickly even in the best circumstances, as the females lay very few eggs in their lives. Another threatened frog species Hochstetter's Frog (Leiopelma hochstetteri) also lives in the path of the mining companies should the government's plans go through. Neither species can be bred in captivity...if they go extinct in the wild, they are gone forever!

Photos are of Archey's Frog (above) and Hochstetter's Frog (below). I took these in the winter of 2004, while on a frogging expedition with researchers from the New Zealand Department of Conservation. Both species are under severe threat from the introduced chytrid fungus and non-native rats. Mining could mean an end to the species.

Let's make sure the New Zealand government does not push these frogs to the edge of extinction...or over the abyss. Make your voice heard!
