Let's Get Frog Dissections Out Of Every Public School in the USA by 2014
Dear SAVE THE FROGS! Supporter,
Frog dissections are unethical and unnecessary. Furthermore, they are contributing to the depletion of wild frog populations and the spread of harmful invasive species and infectious diseases. As many alternatives to traditional frog dissections now exist (such as Digital Frog 2.5), it is inexcusable for schools and universities to continue their frog dissection programs and thereby directly contribute to the decline and extinction of amphibian populations and species.
SAVE THE FROGS! has initiated a campaign to get frog dissections out of every public school in the USA by 2014. That is not a lot of time, considering the huge number of schools that currently dissect. With your help though, we can achieve our goal! In 2011, we want 200 USA public schools to abandon their dissection programs: help us make it happen!
The Race To Stop Dissections Contest
Calling All Teachers! Calling All Students!
The Race To Stop Dissections Contest has begun and the frogs need you to take part. The Race To Stop Dissections Contest asks students and teachers to assist worldwide amphibian conservation efforts by getting their schools and school districts to abandon their frog dissection programs. Not only will students learn all about frogs and campaign organizing, they will experience the satisfaction of saving hundreds or even thousands of frogs destined to an unpleasant end on their school's biology tables. Plus the winning school will win cash prizes and an opportunity to have me speak at their school!

Victory for the Northern Leopard Frogs!
Subsequent to my speaking to his school about amphibian conservation, the last remaining frog-dissecting teacher in Santa Clara Unified School District agreed to have his classes not dissect frogs in 2011! This action saved 160 wild Northern Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens)! We'll be working to ensure this school stays dissection free...and saves 160 frogs annually!

SAVE THE FROGS! at Antonelli Pond
SAVE THE FROGS! held its first ever habitat restoration event last Monday (MLK Day), and it was a huge success. Thanks to the 40 volunteers of all ages who came out to help us remove non-native English Ivy under the warm Santa Cruz sunshine! SAVE THE FROGS! is now applications for the 2011 Nate The Newt Award for Amphibian Conservation through February 15th. Submit your proposal detailing how you would use $500 to save amphibians -- and you may win the $500 to set your plan into motion!

Student of the Month: Gabriel Cruz
I am pleased to announce that the January 2011 Student of the Month is 4th grader Gabriel Cruz. At Gabriel's request, the Ivy League School in Smithtown, NY abandoned their frog dissection program on January 10th, 2011. Gabriel learned about the problems with dissections in the December 30th, 2010 SAVE THE FROGS! electronic newsletter.

I didn't go on the trip because in your email you mentioned over 320,000 frogs are killed for dissection. That's why I didn't dissect a frog. Thank you for the letter!
