Frog Poetry Contest Grand Prize Winner Announced
Congratulations to 12 year old Brittany Belanger of Stockton, CA, for her Grand Prize winning poem entitled "Almost Gone". You can view all the winning poems here. Yellow-legged Frog Update!
707 Save The Frogs supporters from 11 countries sent the National Park Service letters urging them to save the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frogs by removing the non-native trout from Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Now we're focusing on the California Department of Fish & Game, who still stocks invasive trout in California's naturally fishless lakes and streams. Please send them a letter asking them to stop this practice.

Saving the Sierra Nevada Yellow-Legged Frogs
The Sierra Nevada Yellow-Legged Frogs (Rana sierrae and R. muscosa) were once the most abundant frogs in California, but have disappeared from over 90% of the lakes it once inhabited, in large part due to the introduction of non-native trout, which are voracious predators of tadpoles. Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute - Panama City
SAVE THE FROGS! Founder & Executive Director Dr. Kerry Kriger has just returned from two weeks in Panama teaching a course at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama City. The 5-day course, entitled "Instruction and application of quantitative PCR molecular techniques for the study of amphibian epidemics" was attended by 25 scientists from Panama, Colombia, and Costa Rica. Amphibian population in all three countries have experienced severe declines in numbers due to the chytrid fungus.
We have added a new webpage to this site, which contains the most detailed protocol in existence for the detection and quantification of the amphibian chytrid fungus, which has driven 100 amphibian species to complete extinction. View the page and read more about the course here.
Chytrid Fungus Webpage
The chytrid fungus is the deadliest organism on the planet, after humans. We've added a slideshow describing the ecology of the fungus in eastern Australia, a region that has had at least 8 frog species go extinct in recent decades.
