Com a crescente perda populacional de anfíbios, torna-se necessário iniciativas que busquem amenizar os impactos causados a esse grupo de vertebrados. A educação ambiental é uma ótima ferramenta para tal. A ONG SAVE THE FROGS! criada em 2008 pelo Dr. Kerry Kriger, no estado da Califórnia, tem como objetivo proteger populações de anfíbios e promover uma sociedade que respeite e valorize a natureza e a vida selvagem. Em 2017, foi instituída a SAVE THE FROGS! Minas Gerais, presidida pelo biólogo Cleiton Caetano, que conta com ajuda de da vice-presidente Ana Frois, Secretário Davi Oliveira, coordenadora de comunicações Camille Aleixo, tesoureira Paula Araujo, que tem mesmo objetivo, porém com foco em Minas Gerais Brasil. Nos dias 22 e 23 de maio, a SAVE THE FROGS! Minas Gerais, desenvolveu um projeto juntamente com uma escola de Belo Horizonte, denominada Escola da Serra, que está localizada na Rua do Ouro, n. 1900, Bairro Serra. Uma escola que foge dos métodos de ensinos tradicionais, esta adota uma metodologia no qual o estudante tem a liberdade em aprender da forma que for mais fácil para ele, tornando-os pessoas mais críticas e com espírito investigativo.
With the increasing decline in amphibian populations, initiatives are needed that mitigate the impacts caused to these vertebrates, and environmental education is a great tool for this. SAVE THE FROGS! was created in 2008 by Dr. Kerry Kriger, in the state of California. It aims to protect amphibians’ population and to build up a society that respects and appreciate nature and wildlife. In 2017 we established SAVE THE FROGS! Minas Gerais, presided over by the biologist Cleiton Caetano, and supported by the Vice-President Ana Frois, the secretary Davi Oliveira, the communications coordinator Camille Aleixo, and the treasurer Paula Araujo. With the same goal, but focused on Minas Gerais, Brazil, SAVE THE FROGS! Minas Gerais conducted a project along with a school in Belo Horizonte (Escola da Serra) on May 22nd/23rd, 2017. This school does not apply traditional teaching methods, and adopts a methodology in which the students have the freedom to decide the easiest way to learn for them, giving them a more critical investigative view.

Na segunda-feira dia 22 de maio, após passar o dia no acampamento, reconhecendo a área, interagindo com os professores da instituição e alguns alunos, à noite partiu-se em busca de vestígios, sons, e indivíduos representantes do grupo dos anuros. A metodologia utilizada foi a busca ativa, visual e auditiva. Ao percorrer um trecho do riacho, foi possível escutar vocalizações de Hypsiboas albopunctatus. Foi, então, feito uma varredura no local de onde vinha os sons. Porém, os indivíduos não foram encontrados. Mais adiante, no próprio riacho, encontrou-se um jovem de Rhinella sp, que já havia metamorfoseado. Este tinha o tamanho de uma unha humana. Após alguns passos, foi avistado um indivíduo de Rhinellacrucifer. Em uma moita de capim foi novamente notado a vocalização de H. albopunctatus, mas dessa vez, o exemplar foi visualizado. Na volta ao acampamento não se avistou nenhum espécime.
On Monday, May 22nd, after spending the day at the camp, to recognize the area, and to interact with the teachers of the institution and some of its students, we set out in search of amphibians. The methodology used was the active, visual and auditory search. Crossing a creek, it was possible to listen to vocalizations of Hypsiboas albopunctatus. A scan was made at the place where the sounds came from, but the individuals were not found. Later, in the creek itself, a young male from Rhinella sp, had already metamorphosed. It was the size of a human nail. After a few steps, was seen a Rhinella crucifer individual. In a bush of grass was noticed, once again, the vocalization of H. albopunctatus, and now was seen the specimen. No specimen was seen on the way back to the camp.

No dia seguinte, terça-feira, 23 de maio, no final da tarde escutou-se vocalização de Rhinella schineideri, em um lugar de possível ocorrência, próximo ao acampamento. Às 17 horas, o grupo saiu com as crianças, que tem entre 12 e 15 anos. Por questões de segurança, todos estavam portando lanterna, perneira, calça comprida, blusa de manga, e sapatos fechados. Fomos para o sentido contrário ao dia anterior. Foi feita uma roda de conversa para saber o que eles sabiam a respeito de anfíbios, e passou-se algumas informações do grupo, além de recomendações sobre possíveis medidas a serem tomadas em campo. Às 18 horas, o grupo saiu para as margens do riacho para dar início as atividades práticas. Chegando ao local pretendido, os sons de H. albopunctatus estavam em um tom bem alto. No primeiro avistamento na água, notou-se a ocorrência de girinos e imagos de Rhinella sp. Todos sentaram-se um uma ilha que tinha no meio desse riacho, e foi orientado para que todos apagarem as lanternas e ficassem em silencio para escutar as vocalizações. Cleiton e Davi saíram para as proximidades para achar exemplares para mostrar e explicar para os estudantes sobre a espécie, e falar algumas curiosidades. Encontrou-se dois exemplares de H.albopunctatus, um por Cleiton e outro por Davi. Após a explicação, soltaram-se os indivíduos, e retornou-se ao acampamento onde foi feita uma atividade descontraída com imitações de sapos, rãs e pererecas. The next day, Tuesday May 23th, in the late afternoon we heard some vocalizations of Rhinella schineideri, in a place nearby the camp. At 5 PM, the group went out along with the kids (age 12-15). Following safety guidance, everybody was carrying lanterns, wearing gaiters, pants, long sleeve T-shirts, and closed shoes. The group went to the opposite direction to the previous day, and there was a conversation to know what the kids knew about amphibians. The kids also had some safety oversight and guidance. At 6 PM, the group went to the bank of the creek, to start the practical activities. Arriving at the intended place, the sounds of H. albopunctatus were in a high tone. The first sighting was in the water, and we noticed the occurrence of tadpoles of Rhinella sp. Everebody was asked to sit down in a small island in the middle of the creek, then to turn off the flashlights and to keep silence to listen to the vocalizations. Cleiton and David went to the vicinity to find specimens to show and to explain to the students about the species, and to tell them some curiosities. Two specimens of H. albopunctatus were found by Cleiton and by David. After the explanation, the specimens were released. Then, the group returned to the camp, and was made a relaxed activity with imitations of frogs. Finally, the official photo with the SAVE THE FROGS! Minas Gerais flag, to finish this beautiful expedition!
