SAVE THE FROGS! Education Center in Berkeley, California

Since our beginnings in 2008, SAVE THE FROGS! has never had our own space where we could educate the public about frogs. To date, our public presence outside of cyberspace has been generally restricted to live presentations at schools and universities, or informational tables at farmers markets and conferences. It is time we metamorphose and place ourselves directly in the public view! The SAVE THE FROGS! Education Center in Berkeley, California will provide us exactly such an opportunity.

SAVE THE FROGS! Education Center in Berkeley, California

The Education Center will serve as a space to hold educational presentations, classes and workshops; it will enable us to increase our annual revenues as we will finally have a physical location at which to sell our eco-friendly merchandise; and it is located on a major street and thus will help us spread our message far and wide and attract many new supporters. Berkeley is a well known, international city with a world-renowned university and a history of environmental activism. We will benefit from and contribute to a community that is on the cutting-edge of environmental action. The SAVE THE FROGS! Education Center will be located at 2524 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94702, just across the Bay from San Francisco.

Take The Tour! We look forward to meeting you in person at the Education Center. Until then, please enjoy these photos!

Here’s the view looking towards the back

Along the back of the left wall we will build a stage for presentations and set up a permanent data projector. The front half of the left wall will be an area to display and sell SAVE THE FROGS! shirts and posters. The right half of the back portion of the room will have a seating area where frog lovers can relax and read through some of the amphibious books that will be on the bookshelf. Framed frog art will hang from the wooden area that runs along the bottom of the mezzanine. The mezzanine area upstairs is our office, otherwise known as SAVE THE FROGS World Headquarters!

View looking towards the front

This is the view looking out towards the street. We’ll cover the upper half of that left wall with a large colorful frog mural. We will build a long shelf that runs along the wall, which will have an Action Center dedicated to petitions, donations and memberships; and an area all about our local, national and international programs and campaigns. Above the shelf we will have posters, photos and flyers relevant to whatever is being highlighted on the shelf below. We will have colorful window displays to lure passersby in, and the middle of the floor will have a variety of our eco-friendly merchandise on display.

Here’s our office, upstairs

We’ve already moved SAVE THE FROGS! World Headquarters into the upstairs mezzanine area, which overlooks the Education Center. it’s all in the same room, making it easy for our staff and volunteers to communicate whether they are in the office or on the floor. Plus, it reduces our commute time and carbon footprint!

Street view

This is the outside of the soon to be Education Center. We’ll remove the old tenants’ signage and have plenty of space to promote SAVE THE FROGS! and catch the eyes of any frog lovers who drive, walk or bicycle by! On top of large window decals, we will have a large backlit savethefrogs.com sign going across the area above the windows.

Meet our neighbors!

One of the reasons we were initially drawn to this location is our awesome neighbors: The Sierra Club, The Ecology Center, Golden Gate Audubon Society and several other nonprofits. We have already spoken at the Sierra Club and we look forward to networking, brainstorming and collaborating with all the wonderful people who work in this complex.

“Hi Kerry,
Creating an education center in Berkeley is really exciting, as is my recognizing how fully you continue to be involved in STF. You are a true visionary, and your actions follow your dreams. It is exciting for me to see how global your reach is, and how your passions continue to manifest in new ideas to educate others – a key to success in saving vulnerable species. I just sent a donation via PayPal, and look forward to receiving a copy of “The Story of Save The Frogs!”

Best wishes, Vic Eichler”

Events

We plan to hold lots of events at the Education Center. Here are some of our ideas:

– Regular presentations by docents, staff and guest presenters.
– SAVE THE FROGS! Academy weekly class where students and volunteers learn about and take an active role in our current programs and campaigns.
– SAVE THE FROGS! Kids Classes and After School Camp that will have classroom and field components.
– Frog Art Classes where we teach people how to make great frog art, increasing their interests and skills in both art and the environment.
– Frog Art Shows where we auction off the fabulous frog art we receive in our SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest.
– Frog Poetry Recitals: it’s Berkeley, anything goes!
– Flat screen TV playing SAVE THE FROGS! or other environmental films during a dedicated movie hour.
– Environmental benefit concerts featuring Berkeley’s world-class musicians. These will draw in many people who would not otherwise have ended up in the Education Center.
– Drumming For The Frogs: Monthly drum lessons, another way to reach out to a crowd that may not otherwise have come across SAVE THE FROGS!
– Frog-themed birthday parties
